Assalamu alikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh.

Dear Brothers,

I am pleased to welcome you to the official website of the Embassy of the State of Qatar in the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, hoping that the website will provide important knowledge and information about the host country Bangladesh and be a window through which you will find the services provided by the embassy.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the State of Qatar and the People’s Republic of Bangladesh on 25 January 1978 and opening embassy in Dhaka on 15 January 1980, the brotherly ties have deepened gradually, as Qatar and Bangladesh enjoy with the excellent and deep relations fostered by history, culture, religion and common values.

The development of Qatari-Bangladesh relations in this growing and regular form was the result of the appreciated efforts made by the predecessor ambassadors who continued to develop these relations, and thanks to all these efforts, the Qatari-Bangladesh relations continued at a solid and steady pace.

Dear brothers, a large number people of the Bangladeshi community are currently working in Qatar and are receiving all necessary comforts and cares which have been assured for them by the laws in this regard. The Bangladeshi labor force makes a significant contribution to the economic and social development of the two brotherly countries and will continue to do so in the coming days; as Bangladesh is still able to provide an adequate workforce.

On the other hand, the Government of Bangladesh has reformed its investment policy significantly with a clear vision to attract foreign investment. There are a large number of new potential and promising sectors for investment, such as energy and infrastructure development, seaports, airports, telecommunications, small and medium industries and many other sectors, which can attract the Qatari investors, and they can be benefitted from the facilities and incentives provided by the government to the investors.

HC remarks on Occasion of Discussion Meeting to celebrate Gandhi Jayanti

Hon’ble Minister for Roads and Bridges H.E Mr. Obaidul Quader,

Distingushed Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,

 1.  I am honoured to be here today to participate in this significant discussion on a topic that holds immense relevance not only in the context of our shared history but also in the world we inhabit today.

 2.  The subject at hand, “Gandhiji’s quest for peace and harmony in Noakhali and its relevance in this contemporary world,” takes us back to a crucial chapter in our collective history, when Mahatma Gandhi embarked on a mission that resonates profoundly even in our present times.

 3.  In 1946, during the tumultuous period leading to the partition of India, Noakhali in present-day Bangladesh witnessed horrific communal violence. It was in the midst of this turmoil that Gandhiji, inspired by the profound belief in non-violence and the oneness of humanity, undertook what came to be known as the “Noakhali March.”

 4.  Gandhiji’s presence in Noakhali was not just a symbolic act, but a powerful demonstration of his unwavering commitment to peace and unity. He walked amidst the suffering, reaching out to both Hindus and Muslims, urging them to lay down their arms and embrace the path of non-violence.

 5.  His message was simple yet profound – that in the face of hatred and violence, love and compassion are the most potent weapons. He sought to heal wounds, to bridge divides, and to restore a sense of humanity that transcended religious and communal identities.

 6.  Gandhiji’s efforts in Noakhali exemplify the extraordinary power of dialogue, empathy, and understanding, even in the most challenging of circumstances. His unyielding dedication to the principles of non-violence and communal harmony not only brought solace to Noakhali, but also left an indelible mark on the conscience of humanity.

 7.  Today, we find ourselves in a global landscape where conflicts, both within and between nations, persist. Religious, ethnic, and cultural divides continue to challenge the fabric of societies. In such times, Gandhiji’s approach in Noakhali serves as a guiding light, offering us valuable lessons in conflict resolution, compassion, and the pursuit of lasting peace.

 8.  In a world inundated with discord, Gandhiji’s principles remain a beacon of hope. His belief in the innate goodness of humanity, his unwavering faith in non-violence as a force for change, and his ability to transcend the boundaries of religion and nationality, are as relevant today as they were then.

 9.  Let us engage in open dialogue, fostering an environment where diverse voices are heard and respected. Let us reach out across divides, seeking common ground and building bridges of understanding. And let us, like Gandhiji, have the courage to stand up for the values that unite us as human beings.

 10.  In conclusion, the lessons from Noakhali are not confined to history books; they are a living testament to the enduring power of love over hatred, of unity over division. Let us draw inspiration from Gandhiji’s noble endeavor and work towards a world where peace and harmony prevail.

The profile of The High Commissioner of India, Dhaka

Pranay Verma assumed the office of the High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh on 21 September 2022.

He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1994 and has held diplomatic assignments in Hong Kong, San Francisco, Beijing, Kathmandu, Washington DC and Hanoi.

Before arriving in Dhaka, High Commissioner Verma served as the Ambassador of India to Vietnam since July 2019.

Earlier, he held the position of Joint Secretary of the East Asia Division at the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi from June 2017 to July 2019; and of Joint Secretary for External Relations at the Department of Atomic Energy in Mumbai from October 2014 to June 2017. He served as Staff Officer to Foreign Secretary and Director in-charge of climate change negotiations during 2009-2010.

Pranay Verma has a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He also holds a Master’s degree from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, U.S. Before joining the Indian Foreign Service, he started his professional career as a Graduate Trainee at India’s steel manufacturing company, Tata Steel.

He and his wife Manu have a son and a daughter.

বিএনপির নির্বাচন বয়কট প্রসঙ্গে যা বলল যুক্তরাষ্ট্র

দ্বাদশ জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনের তপশিল প্রত্যাখ্যান করেছে বিএনপি। দলটির নির্বাচন বয়কটের সিদ্ধান্ত বাংলাদেশে নির্বাচন প্রক্রিয়া ও এর বৈধতা নিয়ে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের উদ্বেগ বাড়াবে কি না- এমন প্রশ্নের জবাবে মার্কিন পররাষ্ট্র দপ্তরের মুখপাত্র ম্যাথু মিলার বলেছেন, ‘আমি আগেও বলেছি, বাংলাদেশে শান্তিপূর্ণভাবে অবাধ, সুষ্ঠু নির্বাচন সম্পন্ন হোক, সবসময় এটাই আমাদের (যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের) চাওয়া।’

সোমবার মার্কিন পররাষ্ট্র দপ্তরের প্রেস ব্রিফিংয়ে প্রশ্নের জবাবে তিনি এ কথা বলেন।

ওই প্রশ্নে বলা হয়, ‘বাংলাদেশের প্রধান তিন রাজনৈতিক দলকে (আওয়ামী লীগ, বিএনপি ও জাতীয় পার্টি) আসন্ন জাতীয় নির্বাচনের জন্য নিঃশর্ত সংলাপের আহ্বান জানিয়ে চিঠি দিয়েছেন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের দক্ষিণ ও মধ্য এশিয়াবিষয়ক সহকারী পররাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী ডোনাল্ড লু। ২০২৪ সালের ৭ জানুয়ারি নির্বাচন হওয়ার কথা। ৩০টির বেশি রাজনৈতিক দল নির্বাচনে অংশগ্রহণের ঘোষণা দিয়েছে। তবে বিরোধী দল বিএনপি নির্বাচন বয়কটের ডাক দিয়েছে। যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের চোখে এই নির্বাচন অংশগ্রহণমূলক হবে নাকি (বিএনপির নির্বাচন বয়কটের প্রেক্ষাপটে) নির্বাচন প্রক্রিয়ার অন্তর্ভুক্তি ও বৈধতা নিয়ে উদ্বেগ বাড়াবে?’

মিলার এই প্রশ্নের উত্তরে আরও বলেন, ‘বাংলাদেশ প্রসঙ্গে বারবার আমার দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণের প্রচেষ্টাকে ধন্যবাদ জানাই। তবে অভ্যন্তরীণ বিষয়ে (কথা বলা থেকে) আমি বিরত থাকব।’

বাংলাদেশে ন্যূনতম মজুরি নিয়ে বিক্ষোভকারী শ্রমিকদের বিরুদ্ধে সাম্প্রতিক সহিংসতা বিষয়ে আরেক প্রশ্নের জবাবে মিলার বলেন, শ্রমিক ও ট্রেড ইউনিয়নের বৈধ কার্যক্রমকে অপরাধ হিসেবে গণ্য করার বিষয়েও তারা নিন্দা জানাচ্ছেন।
